Our projects

The HEAL Global Research Centre is at the forefront of tackling some of the most pressing health challenges linked to our changing climate. Our research focuses on critical areas such as the health impacts of bushfires, extreme heat, and air pollution, with a special emphasis on vulnerable populations. We are dedicated to developing practical, evidence-based solutions, from improving risk communication during climate disasters to promoting healthier, more sustainable urban environments. Through national and international collaborations, we are committed to informing policy, empowering communities, and driving action to protect and improve health in the face of environmental change.

ClimateRes

This project evaluates community resilience centres to reduce heat and smoke exposure in vulnerable urban populations amid a changing climate.

Supporting the implementation of the Australian National Health and Climate Strategy

The HEAL Centre provides climate change and health policy expertise in support of the development and implementation of the Australian National Health and Climate Strategy.

Bushfires, health protection and risk communication

The HEAL Global Research Centre, in collaboration with the Centre for Safe Air, provides advice on how we can protect ourselves and others from bushfire smoke in the home, school, workplace and outdoor environment.

Assessment of heat effects on health and adaptation measures

Extreme temperature effects on human health in a changing environment, vulnerability assessment and adaptation planning.

Climate, environment and infectious diseases

Understanding environmental transmission pathways of COVID鈥19 and other infectious diseases to improve prevention.

Tackling the health impact of smoke haze in Southeast Asia (HEAL-HAZE)

Assessing the effectiveness of climate change adaptation interventions and strengthening community resilience to wildfire smoke in Southeast Asia for the protection of children鈥檚 health.

Healthy, Equitable and Sustainable Urban Mobility

Promoting active travel and public transport for a post-pandemic world.

Wood heaters and air purification trial

Can portable air purifiers reduce air pollution in homes impacted by wood heater smoke and improve quality of life for people with asthma?

Health sector decarbonisation studies

Reducing the carbon footprint of respiratory inhaler use in Australia.

Healthy-Air: Pollution advice for people with asthma

Developing air pollution exposure reduction and lung health advice for people with asthma.

Clean Energy for Healthy Environments and Lives (CE4HEAL)

Strengthening bilateral relationships and enhancing regional cooperation on cleaner, healthier, and more efficient energy generation and use.

Vulnerability, resilience and adaptation to climate disasters

Strengthening resilience to environmental and climate disasters requires transformative action to tackle climate change and health inequities.
